This document is the first iteration of the EC1.7 report into “Zero Trust Networks and Other Secure Connectivity Solutions”. In EC1.4, DETI has previously demonstrated a point-to-point Quantum Key Distribution link over a dark fibre between two data centres. Whilst successful, the QKD equipment, and the need for a dedicated fibre, makes deployment of this technology impractical for many businesses, and potentially prohibitive in terms of cost for small to medium sized enterprises. The research described in this report has been designed to find practical, yet secure solutions for common SME scenarios, thereby adding “campus” network architectures to an extended examination of inter-site communications begun in EC1.4. As a result of the focus on SMEs, the report examines solutions that are free (Open Source) alongside commercial offerings.
