Ansys Discovery Live Engineering Design Competition

Want to show off your engineering insight and discoveries, and compete to win prizes? Then enter the Ansys Discovery Live Engineering Design Competition! Be a part of a competition that utilises the first ever real-time simulation environment to gain insight into a design’s performance.

If you don’t have a copy of Discovery Live or are not sure what it is, you can learn more and download an evaluation copy here.

The objective of this competition is to illustrate insight or learned trends obtained directly from using Discovery Live. For example, the insight could be adding material in one location or another to improve fluid flow around a component, or showing how you converged on a design direction in a short amount of time as a result of the instantaneous feedback from Discovery Live.

We believe a video is the best way to illustrate these finding, so all contestants must submit a brief video illustrating their findings. If you do not have access to video recording software, please use your favorite internet search engine to look for free screen capture software and use whatever application suits you best.

Prizes you could win

The top three winners will be awarded the following:

  • 1st place -- $8,494 value
    • NVIDIA Quadro P6000, one of the world’s fastest graphic cards!
    • Free Discovery Live subscription for 2018
  • 2nd place -- $5,244 value
    • NVIDIA Quadro P5000
    • Free Discovery Live subscription for 2018
  • 3rd place -- $4,245 value
    • NVIDIA Quadro P4000
    • Free Discovery Live subscription for 2018

Requirements and Judging Criteria

This is an open-ended design competition that is not restricted to a particular design, material, or physics type.

Characteristics of a winning video:

  • Demonstrating insight gained through Discovery Live that would have been difficult or impossible in another engineering tool
  • Interesting and innovative use of Discovery Live
  • Exploring a large solution space and multiple design possibilities before converging on an optimal solution

Submission Requirements

Each submission should include a screen capture video and CAD file that explains the following:

  • Define the engineering problem, or what is trying to be optimized
  • How Discovery Live was used to gain new insight or converge on a design
  • What the design change is or the insight gained. Quantitative results are preferred instead of findings such as “the design performs better”. Examples could include an overall time savings or comparative design performance data,

Each video should be at least 1280x720 in size (larger preferred), and be no more than 5 minutes in length. The video should have understandable audio (English only please). However, English captions could be used in place of audio, so long as they satisfactorily explain the requirements.

CAD file:

Please save your CAD file as the default Discovery Live file type, scdoc. No other file types will be accepted. The scdoc file will contain your simulation studies saved within the file.

Optional supporting material:

Feel free to include images or an additional document if it helps better communicate the ideas in your submission.

For the specific Submission Requirements, see the Ansys Discovery Live Engineering Design Competition Official Rules.
