Lean Composites Manufacturing through Machine Learning

The Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS) and the National Composites Centre (NCC) will be hosting an event called 'Lean Composites Manufacturing through Machine Learning', taking place 5th July 2018 at CFMS, Bristol, 10.00 - 14.00hrs, including lunch.

Traditionally high value design parts have been optimised for performance but now there is a business requirement for faster maturity and faster ramp-up on top of optimised performance to meet next generation product and environmental requirements.

This event will demonstrate how combining machine learning techniques with virtual manufacturing simulation enables an accelerated manufacturing process learning curve for shorter ‘time to market’, while also providing insights into improving process and product quality.

The collaborative project, Computer Learning in Automated Manufacturing Processes (CLAMPS) created a physical demonstrator, which automatically adjusts the manufacturing process parameters to ensure consistently high-quality parts. The project highlights the digitalisation and automation steps necessary for incorporation into a liquid composite moulding process to reduce rework, scrap, or repair, ultimately saving costs.

The event will showcase the digital demonstrator and the mould with integral sensors and data acquisition equipment produced from the CLAMPS project, and will highlight key elements of integrating predictive machine learning to drive improvements and minimise variability within the composites manufacturing process.

Consisting of presentations from CFMS and NCC specialists, the event will also include demonstrations of specific elements of the process, which can be accessed during registration and over lunch, including:

  • Preforming and preform trimming

  • Resin transfer moulding of the composite component, influenced by the machine learning

  • Simulation of the process

  • Data Acquisition Equipment

  • Machine learning and validation of the simulation

Delegates also have the option of taking a tour of the National Composites Centre.
