CFMS to take part in advanced wind turbine design project

The Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS) has announced it will be taking part in the second Simulated Wake Effects Platform for Turbines (SWEPT2) project.

Supported by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, and with a project value of £1.48 million, SWEPT2 began on 1st May 2015 and will run for three years, completing in 2018.

Led by DNV GL, SWEPT2 follows the successful 2012 SWEPT project, to establish the viability of Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) based fluid dynamics simulation of turbine array wake interaction effects. The original project partners consisting of DNV GL, Zenotech and the University of Bristol, will be joined by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, STFC Daresbury, CFMS, University of Surrey, University of Strathclyde, Imperial College and SSE Renewables Development UK Ltd.

The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) identifies wind turbine wake interaction modelling as one of the top five technologies to improve the efficiency of offshore wind farms. The use of general purpose Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software on normal hardware has been a limiting factor due to the computational effort and affordability of running simulations.

The SWEPT2 project is focused on investigating the use of GPU-based CFD, a faster and more scalable alternative. This will provide the industry with an advanced toolset to design larger turbines and larger arrays of turbines and will improve the prediction of wind farm failure, which reduces financing cost and allows energy primes to cut carbon emissions, design better wind farm layouts and deliver cheaper environmentally friendly electricity.

Sam Paice, Chief Operating Officer, CFMS, commented, “ Further enhancing our focus on the renewable energy sector, we’re delighted to be involved in such a dynamic project where we have the opportunity to work alongside industry partners in the quest for a greener society.”

About CFMS

The Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS) is an independent, not-for-profit specialist in modelling and simulation. We support the UK delivery of new design methods and processes.

Through our development centre and state-of-the-art facility, we offer specialist skills, resource and access to best in class technologies to enable organisations to achieve significant advances in design processes.

At the heart of innovation, we bridge the gap between industry, academia and the research supply chain, facilitating collaboration, shaping the development agenda’s of industrial process users and capability suppliers.

As a trusted and neutral provider, our vision is to drive a revolution in engineering capability and design, working with organisations to reduce risk in the design phase, product development costs and time to market.
