In this article supporting International Women's Day, we profile Alfonsina Esposito, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer at CFMS.

I am a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer at CFMS.

What do you enjoy most about your role? 

What I most enjoy is the opportunity of adding value to the very cutting-edge challenges of the scientific community, thanks to our active involvement in both research and consultancy projects. Working with industry to solve problems across high value design sectors, and collaborating with academia to industrialise new methods developed is very rewarding. 

What is your background? 

I studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II, which is the oldest public and laic university in the world. I soon got fascinated by the complexity of fluid dynamics modelling, field in which I further chose to focus my studies. I completed a placement at the von Karman Institute for fluid dynamics, where I had the chance to develop my master thesis supervised by recognised international experts.

Did you always know you wanted to work in the Engineering industry?

Not quite. I have always been attracted by deep-thinking topics, from philosophy and ancient greek to bio-chemistry. I finally found myself in the engineering field because I think that, in all of its form, it is the most impressive representation of the progresses people can achieve when they join forces virtuously.

What advice would you give to women wanting to pursue a career in Engineering?

Being persistent, a bit brave when needed, and always be proud of being part of a minority :)

What are you most looking forward to? Any predictions for the future?

As an engineer, I hope I will keep having the opportunity to demonstrate and apply my skills to different challenges. In particular, I am really interested in applying my highly specialistic CFD knowledge in wider integrated contexts, such as systems design optimisation and AI applications.
