Non-Destructive Testing

Non-Destructive Testing

What is non-destructive testing?

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique which is used to evaluate the properties of a material, component, structure or system. NDT plays an important role in many industries and is a major contributor to remnant life assessment and planning lifetime extensions. This allows engineers to evaluate component life and potential failures, which in turn enables engineers to mitigate risk and plan maintenance programmes.

NDT is also known as non-destructive examination (NDE), non-destructive inspection (NDI) and non-destructive evaluation (NDE).

There are many benefits of using NDT other more traditional methods. Selecting the correct NDT technique is fundamental and can have the following benefits:

  • Detection of smaller cracks

  • Reduced inspection time through automated screening

  • Defect monitoring can determine issues before they arise

  • Information to plan long-term maintenance programmes.
