To improve the productivity of various design processes, CFMS is part of the 18-month AI AHEAD project; led by Bristol-based Additive Manufacturing (AM) specialists HiETA Technologies, addressing complex digital engineering challenges.

AI-Ahead encourages collaboration between Canada and the UK post-Brexit, using advanced AM techniques to influence the next generation of compact heat exchangers. The project addresses the challenges associated with the current design process of compact heat exchanger (HX) manifolds using an Artificial Intelligence based approach.

HPC, combined with modelling and simulation

Additive Manufacturing (AM) reduces the time between concept generation and manufacture by creating complex structures that can more efficiently use space compared to traditional manufacturing. As a part of the AI-Ahead project, CFMS designed a high temperature heat exchanger that could be used with a micro gas turbine system, with AM serving to integrate these traditionally separate parts into one component.

Combining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and High Performance Computing (HPC) created a competitive advantage. By arriving at a high value outcome quickly and cost effectively, and by helping to analyse the behaviour of new products under development through faster, more-informed decision-making, greater insight and more robust feedback are incorporated into the design cycle.
