Bristol, 18th January 2018 - The Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS), a specialist in digitally enabled high value design capability, is delighted to have participated in another successful Uncertainty Quantification and Management (UQ&M) study group with industry - this time hosted by James Kermode and Peter Brommer at the Warwick Centre for Predictive Modelling from 13th - 15th December 2017.
Organised by Matt Butchers of the Knowledge Transfer Network, this series of events brings together industrialists (with problems) and academics (with solutions) using an intense 3-day residential format to rapidly develop and demonstrate new technology.
Study groups help companies with established UQ programmes refine their approaches; help companies new to the field understand the benefit that UQ&M could have on their operations; expose UK researchers to the kind of challenges UK industries wish to apply UQ&M to, and enable a cross-fertilisation of ideas between disciplines (data scientists, statisticians or numerical analysts).
At the workshop, challenges were posed by AstraZeneca, HS2, AWE and Zenotech / CFMS (on behalf of the SWEPT2 consortium), with the common theme of applying machine learning to problems of real value to industry.
Led by Dr Alex Diaz (Liverpool University) on Day 1 and Dr Peter Brommer on Days 2 and 3 (Warwick University), the wind energy team split into groups to work on individual approaches. In particular, the physics-based reduced order modelling and the deep learning for CFD image analysis showed promise, which the group will look to take forwards.
Andrei Cimpoeru, CFD Engineer at CFMS. “In just a few hours, the data scientists had identified several possible ways to use the CFD data to train surrogate models.” David Standingford, Director at Zenotech and Lead Technologist at CFMS agrees: “These workshops show just what can be achieved in a short time when the right groups of people are brought together. We now have two very credible machine learning prototypes that can support our work with the wind energy sector.”
