Meet Jory, one of our Senior Research Engineers. After spending time in academia, he joined CFMS, starting his journey in industry.

I joined CFMS in June 2024, as a Research Engineer. My background is in mathematics and since getting my PhD from the University of Bristol in 2017, I had been working as a postdoctoral researcher in Canada, the US and then back in Bristol. After all this time, I wanted a change and to work somewhere that would challenge me to learn new things.

Initially, I was working on developing simulations of the LMDw process using the Lattice Boltzmann Method as a part of the AIRLIFT project. Since then, I’ve taken a role in guiding the direction of the CoSInC project and have recently stepped up to lead the LHyME project. I also worked on stock allocation for the Avanti West Coast timetabling problem and have recently moved into using more traditional CFD using OpenFOAM for ISLAA.

My favourite project is a pet project of mine that has been to predict the permeability of Carbon Fibre layups using the Lattice Boltzmann Method. It’s an important aspect of the composite manufacturing process and currently a blindspot of many manufacturers’ simulations. Thanks to our interns, this idea has developed into an experimentally validated simulation to be deployed within the CoSInC project.

'I love the variety of work that happens and being able to apply myself to lots of different problems. I also really like mentoring our interns and seeing them grow throughout their industry year.'
